CO2-Neutral Fuels

GZM Extraktionswerk AG in Lyss operates as a service provider to the Swiss meat industry for Category 1 animal waste disposal. The company processes approximately 90'000 tons of raw material every year. GZM thus plays a key role in establishing the conditions necessary for the proper regulation of meat supplies in Switzerland.

Category C1 residues are “risk materials” in terms of hygiene (e.g. B. BSE risk materials from the slaughtering process in accordance with the SRM list; animal carcasses). These materials must be sterilised in accordance with the ABR (Animal By-products Regulation) and cannot be used elsewhere in the food and/or feed industry, or for technical purposes.

Animal by-products raw material breaks down as follows: approx. 63% water, 25% protein and 12% fat. This material is ground and milled, sterilised by steam and processed into germ-free animal fat and meat and bone meal, which are used as CO2-neutral fuels.
The “by-products” produced here are highly polluted waste water and exhaust air, which are then cleaned in our own production processes.

GZM also executes a performance mandate for the disposal of public rendering collections from 11 cantons, as well as for the disposal of large farm animals in five cantons. This also includes epidemic readiness in the event of animal disease outbreaks.

The large amount of waste heat produced by processing systems is used effectively by GZM and two municipal disposal companies in the Wärme Lyss Nord (WLN) district heating network. This network reduces annual CO2 emissions by approximately 3'000 tons.
The energy produced by GZM is thus utilised in an optimal and responsible manner.
